Imagine your skin as a bustling metropolis, teeming with inhabitants that maintain its vitality and defence. This dynamic community, known as the skin microbiome, comprises billions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses coexisting harmoniously to protect and nourish your skin. Much like a well-orchestrated city, the balance of these microbial residents is crucial for optimal function.
The Science Behind Microbiome Skincare
At the forefront of microbiome-focused skincare are formulations that support and rebalance the skin’s natural microbial environment. Esse’s approach is rooted in the understanding that traditional skincare practices, particularly those involving harsh cleansers, can strip the skin of beneficial microbes, leading to imbalances. By incorporating prebiotics, probiotics and actives into our formulations, we aim to nourish and fortify the skin’s microbiome, promoting a harmonious environment for beneficial bacteria to thrive.
Clinical Evidence Supporting Microbiome Skincare
Emerging research underscores the efficacy of microbiome-focused skincare. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology highlights that ageing is associated with a reduction in the variety of microorganisms in the skin microbiome, leading to increased susceptibility to skin conditions. This finding underscores the vast potential of microbiome skincare in reinforcing skin health and reducing age-related skin issues.
Esse Skincare’s own clinical trials in Bon, Germany has corroborated these findings. Our Protect Oil, assessed over a 28-day study period, proved the following results:
A 31% increase in hydration
An 11% reduction in wrinkle depth
A 13% increase in skin firmness
A 9% increase in skin elasticity
Skin also recovered faster from irritation when treated with Protect Oil, and remarkable benefits were seen in the product’s namesake study – protection. Protect Oil protected skin from the damaging effects of an irritant, reducing the resulting erythema (redness) by 40% and reducing barrier damage by 31%.
Furthermore, a study published in Frontiers in Medicine investigated the impact of skincare products containing prebiotics and postbiotics on the skin microbiome. The findings revealed that such products could positively modulate the skin microbiome and metabolome, suggesting a mechanism through which microbiome skincare products exert beneficial effects on skin health.
